Cllr Simon Bywater is the proud host of the inspiring podcast series Heroes Among Us; Simon brings a lifetime of diverse and accomplished experiences to his listeners. A former Royal Marine Commando, Greater Manchester Police Detective, skilled freelance investigator, successful business owner, and author, Simon’s journey is resilient and determined. With roots tracing back to Bangalore, India, his heritage has shaped his adaptability and a strong sense of purpose.
Simon has been an elected Cambridgeshire County Councillor for over 12 years, representing more than 10,000 residents with dedication and integrity. He has served diligently on the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire Authority and previously as chairman of the Children and Young People’s Committee, overseeing vital services in education and child services across the county. He acts in a supporting role as a mentor for Care Leavers.
At just 16, Simon began his extraordinary career by joining the Royal Marines Commandos, serving with 40 Commando RM. His deployments took him globally, participating in NATO exercises in Norway, Denmark, Germany, Africa, Brunei, and the Middle East. During the Gulf War, he served in Turkey and Northern Iraq, confronting challenges that shaped his resilience and character.
Following his military service, Simon transitioned to law enforcement as a Detective with Greater Manchester Police in high-pressure environments like Wythenshawe and Moss Side. He later joined Cambridgeshire Police but was forced into early retirement due to health challenges linked to his demanding work.
Undeterred by adversity, Simon became a successful consultant investigator and business owner. His passion for storytelling led him to author several books, including Forced Out, a memoir recounting his journey through adversity to recovery, re-released to inspire and support others.
I’m proud to become an ambassador for Op Belonging here in Cambridgeshire to support our Commonwealth personnel and Gurkhas, whose invaluable contributions often go unrecognised. I want to ensure they receive the respect, representation, and opportunities they deserve for their service and sacrifice to our fine nation.
